On Monday morning in Garissa, learning and business activities came to a halt as hundreds of teachers and boda boda operators protested after the death of a teacher.
According to reports, the 27-year-old teacher, who was a teacher at the Garissa Teachers College, was stabbed by three unknown individuals in Garissa Town on Saturday, October 11.
The three individuals are said to have stopped the lecturer while he was running errands using his motorcycle before they attacked him.
After the incident, the teacher was quickly rushed to Garissa County Referral Hospital, where he finally succumbed to his injuries.
The protestors blamed the incident on security agencies in the county, who they claim have lagged in ensuring security in the town.
"We are losing very young teachers and boda boda. If you look at this teacher, he was not even married, and he didn't have any children, but he was hard-working. What we want is justice for the teachers," one protester said.
According to residents, the incident adds to the growing number of insecurity cases in the town, particularly those targeting boda boda riders and construction workers.
The riders claim that if urgent action is not taken by the county government to restore security in the town, they will launch a crackdown themselves to weed out goons terrorising residents.
"We, as residents of Garissa, don't have justice, because boda boda and other construction workers are still being attacked by the goons when we use some routes. If the Garissa county government is unable to catch these people, they should tell us," one boda boda operator said.
The incident comes a week after three people, including two teachers, were seriously injured after a suspected grenade explosion in a hotel in Mandera County.
According to the Mandera committee leaders, the incident happened on Saturday, October 5, at around 6pm at one of the hotels in the Kona B area of Madera Town.
One of the injured teachers is from Duse Primary School, and the other is from Neboi Primary School in Neboi Ward, both in Madera East Sub-county.
"At around 6pm we received reports that there is a hotel that has been attacked at Kona B, and some of our people have been injured. We want to thank God that no one lost their life, but one person was critically injured," one community leader said.
