Kibera MP Peter Orero's driver, George Oduor, was charged with flouting traffic laws in court on Monday morning.

In videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the driver was seen arriving at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, just days after a CNN correspondent, Larry Madowo, captured their altercation.

Clad in a black hooded sweatshirt, the driver strolled into the building and pulled the hood up at the sight of the cameras.

He faces charges of obstructing other road users and violating traffic rules, in which he drove on the wrong side of the road and engaged in a verbal exchange with the journalist.

The driver was fined Ksh100,000 and released after confessing to obstructing traffic laws as he was rushing the MP to the airport.

“I am sorry, Your Honour. I was in a hurry to drop someone off at the airport, and I will not repeat the offence,” he told the court.

In the now-viral clip, the driver was heard telling Madowo to take his grievances to President William Ruto, at which he accepted the challenge.

Although the CNN correspondent admits to not recognising the MP during the altercation, Kenyans on social media quickly recognised him, eliciting public outrage.

In the aftermath of the video, the MP received criticism from the members of the public, especially for the language he used, which many saw as a show of arrogance.

In a follow-up video, Madowo promised that he would, indeed, drop the video off to President Ruto as soon as he acquired a flash drive to store it in.

Although other MPs who came forward seemingly took Orero's side, a few officials called out the act, including Nairobi County Chief Environment Officer Geoffrey Mosiria, who promised to facilitate the dropping of the flash drive to Ruto and urged Nairobi residents to be as proactive as Madowo and record any similar instances.

The National Police Service (NPS) also condemned the obstruction of traffic by individuals claiming VIP privileges, with spokesperson Michael Muchiri clarifying that only emergency vehicles such as ambulances, other emergency vehicles, the President's and Deputy President’s motorcades, and, in special circumstances, military convoys, are permitted to obstruct traffic.

Traffic Police Commandant Fredrick Ochieng’ also emphasised that officers could only interfere with the flow of traffic when handling incidents that take significant time to resolve.

“As I was speaking earlier, there was a case involving a vehicle using diplomatic number plates that was found driving on the wrong side. It turned out that the plates were fake, and the car was not a diplomatic vehicle. We are still investigating that matter,” Ochieng’ said.
