The suspect who shot and killed a General Service Unit (GSU) officer using an arrow on Monday, October 13, will be detained for 14 days, a Nairobi court has directed.
The suspect, Kithuka Kimunyi, was arraigned at a Kibera Law Court on Tuesday, barely 24 hours after his assault, which led to the death of Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka.
On Tuesday, the prosecution initially requested the detention of the suspect for 21 days for the police to conclude their investigations. However, the days were revised to 14 after a clarification from the judge.
"Your honour, we request the suspect to be detained. so that we can complete investigations in an open manner and determine the full extent of his crimes," the prosecution said.
During the hearing on Tuesday, the court heard that the suspect, who hails from Makueni County, departed from Makueni on his fatal mission on the evening of Sunday, October 12.
According to the prosecution, the suspect was dressed like a deranged individual when he approached the GSU officers at State House Gate D.
"When he approached the gate, he was asked to leave, and that is when he attacked the officers with arrows," the Prosecution said.
It was further revealed that the suspect fired two arrows, with one of them hitting Constable Ramadhan on the left side of his chest. The officer was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
When Kimunyi arrived in court, the suspect was visibly limping, suggesting he also sustained injuries in the buildup to his arraignment on Tuesday.
Before his 14-day detention, the court directed that the suspect receive medical treatment for his injuries at the Mbagathi Hospital.
Part of the reason the prosecution was keen on the suspect's detention was because of his inability to provide a verifiable place of residence, which the court deemed would hinder efforts to trace him if released on alternative terms.
A pathologist's report on the slain officer has since been released, confirming that he passed away from excessive bleeding from a wound inflicted by an object consistent with an arrow.
The autopsy, which came out on Tuesday, October 14, further disclosed that the arrow went through the left seventh and eighth ribs and through the left lung, before puncturing the heart.
