Raila’s State Funeral: Full Timetable for Friday and Saturday

Raila's National Funeral Committee has released the full timetable for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s State Funeral on Friday, October 17, and the subsequent events in Kisumu on Saturday.

The State Funeral service is set to take place at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, and it is set to begin at 7am and end by 2pm.

It is expected to be attended by foreign Heads of State and other dignitaries who are yet to be revealed by the government.

Raila passed away aged 80 on Wednesday, October 15, after suffering a cardiac arrest in India, where he had gone to seek treatment.

Full Timetable for State Funeral

7:00am - Mourners to be seated at the Nyayo National Stadium.

8:00am- Body leaves Lee Funeral Home escorted by the military.

8:15am- Family arrives at Nyayo Stadium.

8:30am - Foreign dignitaries arrive at Nyayo Stadium.

8:45am- President arrives.

9:00am - National and EAC anthems.

9:35am to 11:35am  Church service- Anglican Church of Kenya. 

11:40am to 12:40pm- Deputy President invites the President. The President welcomes foreign heads of state and dignitaries to pay tribute. This will be followed by the Presidential address.

2:00pm- Body leaves for Karen's residence.

Saturday, October 18 Timetable

7:00am - Body leaves Karen's residence for the airport.

8:00am - Body leaves Nairobi for Kisumu.

9:00am to 9:20am - Family and dignitaries arrive at Mamboleo Showgrounds - Jomo Kenyatta Stadium (moved from Moi Stadium-Kisumu).

9:30am to 2:00pm- Public viewing.

2:30pm- Body leaves for Bondo for an overnight stay.

4:30pm - Body arrives in Bondo.

4:40pm- Prayers led by the ACK church.

Raila’s burial will take place on Sunday, October 19 and will be conducted as per the traditions of the Anglican church to which Raila belonged. 

The former Prime Minister is expected to be buried in the family’s graveyard in Kango Ka Jaramogi, beside his late son Fidel and father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's graves. 

In his wishes, Raila had expressed he wished to be buried within 72 hours of his death, which would technically expire on Saturday. 

However, DP Kithure Kindiki, who serves as the co-chair of Raila’s funeral committee, explained that adjustments had to be made to accommodate unforeseen logistics – including the fact that the former Prime Minister died in a foreign country, which required time to repatriate his body to Kenya.
