At least three mourners who lost their lives during the public viewing of the late Raila Odinga at Moi International Sports Centre died from bullet wounds, autopsy results have confirmed.

The latest developments were confirmed by activist Hussein Khalid, who received the body of one of the victims who was killed by a single bullet to the head.

"The cause of death is a single headshot. The bullet went in on the front of the head and exited at the back," Khalid revealed on Tuesday.

In the wake of his death, thousands of mourners showed up on Thursday, October 16 to catch a glimpse of the former Premier's remains.

While the initial viewing was scheduled to take place in parliament, the overwhelming numbers forced the funeral committee to move the viewing to Kasarani, where the numbers proved too big to contain for security agencies.

Video clips circulating online captured hundreds of panicked mourners scampering for safety as sounds of gunshots dominated the stadium.

At one point, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen was spotted signaling to security personnel within the grounds to stop using live bullets on the mourners.

According to the police, chaos erupted after Gate 5 of the stadium was forcefully pushed and massive crowds surged towards the venue, prompting officers to respond with gunfire and teargas.

The outcome sparked national outrage and renewed scrutiny on security agencies,  particularly on crowd management.

According to Khalid, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since launched investigations into the shooting incidents.

The activist also revealed that another victim from the Thursday incident was a mother of three, who died as a result of suffocation from the stampede that erupted at the grounds once police started firing to disperse the crowd.

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has since committed to facilitate the burial expenses of the victims who died from the fracas.

Besides the casualties, more than 100 people sustained injuries from the fracas, according to Medical Services Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga.
