Residents of the Njiru in the Kasarani constituency, Nairobi, on Sunday banded together to dedicate an estate road to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a show of honour, the residents, led by the Kamatuto residents' chairperson and boda boda drivers, propped up the orange and blue sign bearing the words "Raila Odinga Road".
Speaking at the event, the chairperson relayed that the move was in honour of the fallen ODM leader who once served as the Roads Minister.
"I am the chairman of Kamatuto, Njiru, and we are here today as the residents and the Njiru office to remember Baba, so we have decided to have the Raila Odinga Road here in Kamatuto," the chairperson said.
"By doing this, we want to tell Kenyans and even our leaders like Governor Sakaja and MP Karauri that we now have a road that honours Raila here."
The road stretches from Kangundo Road through the Kamatuto Estate and connects it to Mwiki. It is a poorly maintained three-kilometre stretch.
As such, the residents are now calling on Governor Johnson Sakaja and MP Ronald Karauri to renovate the road, as it is not well developed.
If revamped, they believe that it would open up the economic structure of the estate as it connects it to the larger Kasarani constituency.
However, this is not the first time a road has been named after Raila, having been a fixture in Kenyan politics for decades before his demise on October 15.
Even before his passing, the Nairobi County government renamed Mbagathi Way to Raila Odinga Way in late 2021.
The change was made to recognise Raila for his contributions to Kenya's democratic development.
It is a 6-kilometre dual carriageway that runs from Langata Road to Ngong Road.
