Two people have been confirmed dead, and scores of others are feared dead after another mudslide hit the Kibendo Area in Keiyo South on Sunday night, even as the prior death toll hits 26.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisely Rotich confirmed the incident at around midnight on Sunday.

Taking to social media, Governor Rotich relayed that the disaster had happened following continuous rainfall that the county is currently grappling with.

However, he assured that emergency services were already on site to kick off rescue operations.

"We have just experienced another landslide at Kibendo in Keiyo North due to the torrential rains, and the unfortunate has happened," Governor Rotich stated. "The county disaster response team, the office of Area MP team and ambulances are already on site."

In a subsequent update on Monday morning, Governor Rotich relayed that two people had died as a result of the latest mudslide after a rock crashed into the house they were in.

"The county Disaster response team, health team, area chief and residents managed to respond and rushed the injured to Iten County referral Hospital. Sadly, we lost two after a huge rock crashed into the house they were in," he said.

At around the same time, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed that its team was en route to help in further rescue operations.

In the meantime, Governor Rotich has urged all county residents living in fragile areas along the escarpment to move to higher ground to avoid being caught up in the mudslides.

"I beg each one of us to listen. It's extraordinary times and needs each of us to comply to save lives," he warned.

The latest mudslide came just a day after the first spate of mudslides hit the Chesongoch area early Sunday morning, leaving dozens dead.

In the latest update as of Sunday, 6pm, a total of 26 people had succumbed to the disaster. 25 people are still missing, while 26 are hospitalised.
