The Cabinet has given a green light for the expansion of the Muthaiga-Kiambu-Ndumberi road from a two-lane highway into a dual carriageway.

In a dispatch released on Tuesday, November 11, the Cabinet assured that the move would be necessary to ease traffic congestion and improve mobility between Nairobi and Kiambu Counties.

"Cabinet gave the green light to the dualling of the 23.5km Muthaiga-Kiambu-Ndumberi road to ease congestion and improve mobility between Nairobi and Kiambu counties," the dispatch read.

"Cabinet noted that the corridor, serving Muthaiga, Runda, Ridgeways, and Kiambu Town, currently experiences chronic traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours," it added.

The Cabinet confirmed that the project will include bypasses, loops and access roads to increase capacity and reduce journey times.

Furthermore, to guarantee accessibility, the project will feature lanes for non-motorised transport and commuter facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

"The dualling is part of the government’s broader effort to modernise Nairobi’s metropolitan transport network in line with Kenya Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals on infrastructure and mobility," the dispatch read.

The announcement comes two weeks after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja revealed that the county government is investing Ksh2.1 billion in road construction and rehabilitation across all 17 sub-counties of the country's capital.

Speaking on Saturday, October 25, Sakaja said that the county government, which is partnering with the national government to execute these projects, has already dispensed KSh867 million for the construction and rehabilitation of roads in Embakasi East and West.

Umoja One SDA Road, Kwa Maji Road, Umoja Rockfield Road, Tena Police Post Access Road, the Bypass–Mihango Link Road, Aviation School–Fedha–Tassia–Nyayo Embakasi Road, Embakasi Road to Embakasi Village, Mihango Kajuju Road, Kibiku Muhuyu Road, and Komarock Estate Access Road are some of the road projects being prioritised in the initiative.

“These are not plans on paper; they are projects residents can see taking shape. In total, Embakasi East and West have received Sh867 million out of the Sh2.1 billion set aside for city roads, and most of these projects will be completed soon,” Sakaja Said.

“From Kasarani to Dagoretti, from Lang’ata to Westlands, every corner of Nairobi is seeing progress. We are connecting estates, schools, markets, and health facilities through better roads. This is how we bring services closer to our people,”  he added.
