The Kenya Railways Corporation has announced that an additional Madaraka Express passenger train will run this weekend to accommodate a surge in travellers to the coast.

In a notice issued on Thursday, the corporation revealed that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train will be available on Friday, November 14 and Saturday, November 15.

"We wish to inform our esteemed customers that an additional Madaraka Express Passenger Service train will operate on Friday, 14th November 2025, and Saturday, 15th November 2025, to accommodate the increase in passenger demand during this period," the notice read in part.

The train will traverse the SGR route from Mombasa to Nairobi on Friday and then back to Mombasa the following day, on Saturday.

The first train is scheduled to depart Mombasa for Nairobi on Friday at 9:45am and arrive in Voi at 11:21am. At 11:26am, five minutes later, it will leave Voi and reach Nairobi at 3:48pm.

The train will then leave Nairobi for Mombasa at 9:45am on Saturday and arrive in Voi at 1:35pm, and depart again at 1:40pm, arriving at 3:36pm in Mombasa.

As such, Kenya Railways has urged Kenyans willing to take the two trips to book their tickets on time so that they do not miss the opportunity.

"We encourage passengers to book their tickets early via www.metickets.krc.co.ke or use USSD by dialling *639# or visit any SGR station countrywide to secure their seats," Kenya Railways noted.

The additional train comes at a time when Kenya is heading towards the festivities, a period known for heavy traffic of people travelling to the coast for the holidays, signalling a probability of additional trains in December.

This comes just a few hours after SGR Managing Director Philip Mainga announced that all premium class passenger trains are fully booked until February 2026.

Speaking during a press briefing on October 13, he said that the overwhelming number of people seeking to travel to the coast through SGR will force the management to seek additional coaches, especially in the premium class.

"The demand for this premium class is high, so we are now going to order more coaches and equipment to ensure that everyone is accommodated. And for your information, we are booked until February," Mainga said.
