Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja's administration has announced a fresh crackdown targeting unlawful billboards in the city.
In a statement on Sunday, November 16, the governor relayed that the Urban Development and Planning Department would lead the sweeping operation that is targeting 100 billboards.
On Saturday, the county pulled down more billboards along Langata Road, Mombasa Road and Nyayo Stadium Roundabout, leading to 20 total billboards already taken down.
The department's Chief Officer, Patrick Analo Akivaga, has warned that any company found erecting unlawful structures faces a fine of up to Ksh2 million.
“We have so far removed 20 unlawful billboards, and our target is about 100 across the city,” Analo stated. “Companies found erecting or maintaining unlawful structures will face a fine of up to Ksh2 million.”
He also warned that several advertising companies, particularly those whose billboards have not been duly paid for or properly licensed, have already suffered the consequences.
As such, he urged other companies to take this as a strong warning to others who may be flouting regulations.
According to Akivaga, the areas most notorious for this vice are James Gichuru, Mombasa Road, Lang’ata Road, and several other roundabouts in the city.
“This operation is a clear signal that compliance is not optional. Any company that has not met the legal requirements should act immediately or face similar consequences,” Analo warned.
The Sakaja administration has pledged to sustain the crackdown until all unlawful outdoor advertising structures are removed and full compliance is achieved.
“This is part of Governor Sakaja’s commitment to deliver a city of order for all Nairobians,” Analo said.
Over the past few weeks, the county has been under pressure to act on the rampant erection of unlawful billboards in Nairobi, especially in affluent neighbourhoods like Kilimani.
