The united opposition has called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to intervene over alleged plans to rig the Mbeere North by-elections.
In a statement on Friday, November 21, former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi claimed that there was a well-orchestrated scheme to rig the upcoming polls in Mbeere in favour of a pro-government candidate.
According to Muturi, there were plans by a group of politicians to hire goons to disrupt elections in some polling stations within the constituency and bribe voters.
"The schemes to corrupt the Mbeere North by-election are no longer rumours. They are orchestrated, financed and deployed. Importing goons, bribing voters, and plotting to intimidate citizens will not rewrite the will of the people," Muturi said.
Adding, "I have formally demanded that IEBC stop this lawlessness and guarantee a free, fair and credible election on November 27. Mbeere North refuses to be bullied. Democracy will not be auctioned."
Mutiri went on to reveal that the said goons would mostly be hired from Nairobi and Kiambu counties under the assistance of the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO).
He alleged that the goons would then be escorted to the designated polling stations under the command of the National Police Service (NPS) to disrupt the by-elections.
"These plans are given credence by the heavy presence of these imported goons identified within Kanyuambura, Ishiara and Siakago towns," Muturi claimed.
In his petition to the electoral body, the former Attorney General called on IEBC to put in place measures to immediately address the planned hiring of the goons to interfere with the elections.
He also called on the Commission to provide, on the election day, an updated voter register to avoid cases of missing or misplaced names.
"I bring to your attention the above plans to deny voters a free, fair, credible and verifiable election. I call upon your commission to put in place measures to redress their evil and illegal machinations. and update us on the measures taken," Muturi stated.
Muturi's demand notice comes against the backdrop of yesterday's notice by IEBC, in which it warned Kenyans against double voter registration and falsification of details to rig the polls.
