Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, has asserted that the Western region is best placed to succeed President William Ruto in 2032.

Speaking in Malava constituency on November 21, while campaigning for David Ndakwa, the UDA candidate in the upcoming by-elections, Mudavadi told residents that the Luhya nation has its best chance in history to rise to the presidency, saying the community is closer to power than it has been since independence.

Mudavadi was accompanied by other regional leaders, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula and Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya. He also said that he would be grateful if he were mandated to lead the community to the highest seat in the country, but added that he would support anyone who was trusted with that task.

“We, as the Luhya nation, since independence, have not been at the top. If God says it's Oparanya, Wetangula, Mudavadi, or any other leader, it's okay. We have no better chance than this time round.”

While rallying the community to support President Ruto in 2027, he warned leaders pushing tribal politics in the region to stop claiming they are undermining their national ambitions. He also told residents that Ruto is well placed to win the 2027 elections, framing that the Western future is tied to Ruto's administration.

“Those talking tribal politics have no ambition because they think they are pleasing their tribe only. They have no intentions of looking for something else. You should not hold the people of your community prisoners to your intentions.”

He criticised the opposition, telling the residents to be very careful with those aligned with the opposition, saying that the opposition has seen the western people close to government and now wants to dupe them by taking them where they had already left, asserting that President William Ruto is guaranteed to become the president in 2027.

“All these people were in government, all of them, but Ruto still defeated them, without the police, without the deep state. He was out. He campaigned and won. Now he has the government, and defeating him will not be a walk in the park.”

Mudavadi also emphasised the government's commitment to provide security to voters during the byelections, scheduled in some parts of the country, on November 27. downplaying the opposition's claim that the government was planning to disrupt the by-elections to intimidate voters.

“There shall be maximum security to see that democracy is conducted properly. Everybody shall be safe to vote freely and fairly,” Mudavadi assured.

The western region has produced three vice presidents since independence. Musalia Mudavadi was the first from the region to come closer to the presidency when he was appointed vice president by the late President Daniel Moi.

During President Mwai Kibaki's time, his vice president was Kijana Wamalwa, who, a few months after taking office, lost his life to illness. Moody Awori, who also hails from the region, was appointed by Kibaki and served as the second-in-command until 2007.
