National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has dismissed rumours alleging the death of Kwanza Constituency Member of Parliament, Ferdinand Wanyonyi.
Addressing parliamentarians on Thursday, December 4, Wetangula condemned the misinformation, terming it malicious and insensitive, assuring Kenyans that the MP is alive and is currently receiving treatment in India.
Wetangula revealed that Wanyonyi, who had been admitted at Nairobi Hospital for about a month, was later referred to India by doctors for specialised treatment.
He confirmed that the lawmaker was in the company of his wife and daughter, who have been by his side throughout his treatment.
"I want to clarify that the honourable Ferdinand Wanyonyi is unwell. He was in Nairobi hospital for about a month, and doctors recommended that we take him to India," Wetangula noted.
The speaker emphasised that he personally spoke with Wanyonyi through a conference call on Thursday morning, confirming that the lawmaker was doing well.
He further noted that the clerk of the National Assembly also held a similar call with the ailing lawmaker on the same day, moments after Wetangula's call.
Wetangula warned Kenyans against spreading false reports about the MP, describing them as 'evil rumour mongers' who he claimed intended to cause unnecessary alarm.
"He is now in India. Yesterday I had a conference call with him and his spouse, who took him, this morning the National Assembly clerk did the same," Wetangula revealed.
"I am saying this because I want to send a message to the evil rumour mongers that are out claiming that he passed on and we are holding on to information maliciously," he added.
Wanyoinyi, who currently serves in the Departmental Committee on Agriculture, has been absent from parliamentary seating for some time now, prompting concerns from a section of Kenyans.
Wanyonyi successfully retained his seat in the 2017 and 2022 general elections after vying on FORD‑Kenya, which merged with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
