This will be the second high-profile tournament which Kamaku is taking charge of since making his debut in the tournament in 2019, when CAF picked him to officiate the final group D match, Namibia against the Ivory Coast.

In the AFCON 2023, Waweru was also among 26 referees selected to act as centre referees. He officiated the group stage match between Morocco and the DRC.

Today, Kamaku will serve as the center referee, assisted by fellow Kenyans Gilbert Cheruiyot as the first assistant referee and Stephen Yiembe as the second assistant referee. Morocco’s Mustapha Kechchaf has been named the fourth official.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) desk will be handled by Hamza El Fariq of Morocco, while Abdulaziz Yasir of Sudan will act as the Assistant VAR  official.

The 2025 AFCON kicked off on Sunday, 21 December 2025, marking the beginning of the 35th edition of the international football tournament.

The tournament, which features  24 national teams from across the continent, is scheduled to run for nearly a month, with the final match expected to be held on January 18, 2026.

The matches are being staged in stadiums located in Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez.

Later today, in the second Group B match between Egypt and South Africa, Kenyan referee Engineer Dickens Mimisa will serve as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
