As investigations continue into the recent altercation between Embakasi East Member of Parliament and Kileleshwa Ward Member of the County Assembly, Robert Alai, CCTV footage has emerged showing the sequence of events leading up to the alleged squabble.
The footage, which is currently under scrutiny by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), shows Alai drawing what seems like a firearm during the wrangles that took place on January 3, 2026.
It all begins around 4:01 pm, when the footage captures Babu Owino rising from his seat at a first gazebo located inside the restaurant in the Kilimani area and heading to a second gazebo, believed to be where Alai was seated.
Alai was seated alongside a group of six men, with initial interactions between Babu Owino and Alai's group appearing to be cordial as the individuals exchanged handshakes.
Exactly 2 minutes and 32 seconds into the footage, the Kileleshwa MCA rises and begins shoving Babu, triggering a physical altercation as the Embakasi lawmaker attempts to defend himself.
The situation quickly escalates, and Alai immediately draws what looks like a firearm and cocks it. This makes the onlookers scamper for safety, seemingly in fear of what might happen next.
At 4:09pm, a female patron at the restaurant approaches the two and attempts to quell the situation. However, footage shows what seems to be Alai turning against the woman.
Alai allegedly goes ahead to strike her, forcing a client who had stood from a distance watching the unfolding to rush to the woman's rescue.
The altercation further escalates to a third gazebo, during which Alai is captured, allegedly throwing something at Babu Owino. The Embakasi East lawmaker then slowly exits the restaurant through gate 1.
However, despite the CCTV footage, the Kileleshwa representative has since denied any wrongdoing, dismissing claims that he brandished a gun at Babu.
"There was no instance where we drew guns at each other, as alleged, or where I drew a gun at him. I do not think that is a fair analysis of the situation," said Alai.
Meanwhile, Babu Owino has since called on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.
