Investigations conducted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have attributed the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo to a road accident, dismissing claims of foul play.
In a statement on Monday, January 5, the DCI confirmed that Jirongo died in a road accident on the night of December 13, 2025, in the Karai area along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.
Following the incident, speculations over his death and concerns from the family sparked an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, with a multi-agency team comprising homicide detectives and experts from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.
According to DCI, the officers visited and processed the scene, secured key exhibits, documented physical evidence, and recovered CCTV footage from the petrol station, which is located along the highway, for review and analysis.
Additionally, the DCI officers also went ahead to obtain the bus manifest and amateur videos from the scene and subjected them to forensic analysis.
During the probe, the detectives also received statements from several key witnesses, including the deceased politician's wife and the first family member who was contacted immediately after the incident.
Others who also recorded statements are the driver of the ill-fated bus, the bus conductor, and staff members from the said petrol station and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula.
Similarly, seven passengers from the bus presented themselves to assist in the investigation, with detectives also obtaining a statement from the driver of the alleged rescue bus.
"Based on the evidence gathered and analysed to date, the incident appears to be a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play," the DCI revealed.
"Upon conclusion of the remaining investigative processes, the investigation file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for appropriate directions," the detectives added.
However, the DCI officers have maintained that the driver of the ill-fated bus now risks potential criminal charges based on the available evidence gathered.
In their statement, the detectives further warned Kenyans against making speculative or unsubstantiated statements that could prejudice the investigative process or cause undue public anxiety.
The latest development comes hardly three weeks after an autopsy conducted on the body of the deceased found that Jirongo died from severe blunt-force trauma consistent with a high-impact collision.
