130 Schools Closed in West Pokot Over Insecurity

Anxiety has gripped parents in West Pokot after 130 primary schools were closed indefinitely due to the ongoing insecurity in Kerio Valley.

Addressing the press on Friday, West Pokot Senator John Lonyangapuo stated that the decision was reached due to the rampant attacks by armed bandits in the region.

Professor Lonyangapuo said that this would ensure students are safe and enable the operation to flush out the bandits in the area be carried out swiftly. 

“Disarmament should be a uniform process in Kerio Valley, not targeting one community,” the senator said.

The senator’s announcement comes barely a week after Deputy President William Ruto said that Kerio Valley would be gazetted as a dangerous area for a security operation to flush out cattle rustlers.

Ruto directed more resources including police reservists, aerial support technology, and the establishment of emergency police posts in the region to ensure security is restored in the region

In the recent wave of chaos in the area, more than 10 people have been killed while more than 10,000 others have been displaced.
