Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago Fails to Attend Senate Meeting for Paternity Leave

Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago is on the spot after he paralysed activities of a Senate committee since he was away to welcome his newborn baby.

The Governor was scheduled to appear before the Senate Public Accounts and Investment Committee to respond to questions raised by the Auditor-General on financial spending during the 2015/2016 financial year last week.

He sent his Deputy Daniel Chemno in his stead who the committee kicked out along with county officials sent to represent Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto.

The committee’s vice chairman, Prof, John Lonyangapuo, directed that the two Governors honour the summons in person on June 7.

The Vice Chair further ruled that the officials ought not to be given their allowances for the wasted trip to Nairobi, as it amounted to misuse of public funds.

Mandago, however, refuted claims that he had failed to honour the summons out of defiance, citing that he had taken paternity leave.

The Governor promised to attend the next committee meeting.

"I will make arrangements to appear before the team on June 7 without failure," he assured.
