Women Who Want to be Governors and President in 2017

As the August General Election approaches, a majority of leaders have already thrown their weight in the contest for some of the top positions.

With the Constitution offering six posts to contest for, two of those have remained elusive for the Kenyan women despite being encouraged to vie for them.

The country has not yet had a female Governor or President and history could be made after the upcoming polls if some of those who have expressed interest in the two positions, emerge winners.

Here is a list of the aspiring female President and Governors compiled by Kenyans.co.ke.

Nazlin Umar

The award-winning activist could enter in the history books if she succeeds in her bid to become the country's first female President as an Independent candidate.

Umar previously vied for the position as the only woman in the disputed 2007 polls but lost to former President Mwai Kibaki.

In the August election, she is again the only woman who has so far been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission and could become the country's next Head of State.

Anne Waiguru

The former Devolution Cabinet Secretary has already clinched the Jubilee ticket for the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat beating her close competitor, Gitari Gachoki, and incumbent Governor Joseph Ndathi.

Waiguru has been traversing the County popularising her candidacy and is expected to go head to head with Ndathi who will vie as an independent candidate and Narc Kenya boss Martha Karua.

Martha Karua

The Narc-Kenya leader has also thrown her hat into the ring and is already campaigning to be the next Kirinyaga Governor.

Karua, who has remained adamant and refused to fold up her party to join the more popular Jubilee, is expected to go it all the way to the ballot against Waiguru and Ndathi.

Following a fallout that emanated from the primaries, Ms Karua named Gachoki as her running mate in her bid to become the first female governor.

Charity Ngilu

After being dismissed from the helm of the Lands Ministry, the former Cabinet Secretary is set to vie for Kitui governorship.

The Narc Party leader, popularly known as mama rainbow, has been on a sustained campaign as she seeks to dethrone incumbent Julius Malombe who clinched the Wiper ticket in the concluded nominations.

Wavinya Ndeti

The former Youth and Gender Assistant Minister is set to make a political comeback after being in the cold following her 2013 loss.

Ms Ndeti recently folded her Chama Cha Uzalendo and joined Kalonzo Musyoka's Wiper Movement which is more popular in the region which she will use to vie for Machakos governorship.

The former Minister won the Wiper nominations with a landslide, beating Machakos deputy governor Bernard Kiala.

Joyce Laboso

The National Assembly Deputy Speaker has already declared her bid for the Bomet seat in at attempt to eject incumbent Governor Isaac Ruto.

Laboso, who will be vying on a Jubilee Party ticket. has been endorsed by a section of top leaders as an alternative for Ruto who is seen as a rebel and has already joined that National Super Alliance (NASA).
