Police Officers Deployed to Turbo, Kesses and Burnt Forest in North Rift

Police officers have been deployed to the North Rift region ahead of the August 8 General Election.

According to Uasin Gishu County commissioner Abdi Hassan, the deployment of the police officers was meant to ensure peace was maintained during the electioneering period.

Hassan stated that they had mapped out violent hotspots in the area such as Turbo, Kesses and Burnt Forest and were beefing up security ahead of the polls.

“We are monitoring leaders who engage in hate speech and incitement to violence with a view of taking action against them.

“Any act of incitement to violence is against the law and we will not hesitate to take action,” said Hassan.

He highlighted that security teams were engaging political aspirants and monitoring campaigns in a bid to quell cases of hate speech and incitement to violence.

The county boss noted that they were also intensifying patrols in the named areas including violence-prone areas in West Pokot and Baringo counties.

The move comes amidst calls by the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet who ordered officers on Tuesday, to step up vigilance across the country in the wake of the terror attack in the UK.

Boinett revealed that the Kenyan police had stepped up surveillance across the country following Monday night’s terror attack in the English city of Manchester, where 22 people were killed and more than 50 others wounded.
