Criminal Gang of 10 Harass Kisii Residents Causing Curfew to be Imposed

A gang of about 10 armed thieves has caused a small town in Kisii to be placed under a mandatory curfew after they attacked a local shop where they destroyed 200 kilograms of sugar and made away with Sh20,000.

Reports indicate that the gang targetted a shop belonging to one Mr Gilson Ontitai in a series of raids that took five hours to execute.

The criminals broke into Mr Ontita's home, which borders his shop, and had a meal before they conducted the operation.

Mrs Stella Onyancha, a teacher in the assailed town, describes how the gang attempted to break into her home as she hid under the bed with her 2-month old baby.

"At about midnight, they broke all my window panes and demanded that we open the door and give them cash. They stayed for more than an hour then left shooting in the air," she narrated.

Residents of Borangi and Maji Mazuri villages in the County have been suffering harassment under the tyranny of the gangsters who have carried out such raids in the past few days.

The gang members have been on a rampage breaking into houses, making away with valuables and firing a series of shots in the air as they leave.

Residents suspect local law enforcement officers from the Kiamokama Administration Police camp to be behind the attacks, a view they conveyed to top county policemen who visited the area to investigate.

AP Commander Mohammed Kutsola, however, denied the claims maintaining that his officers were all in their living quarters at the time of the attacks.

The villagers now remain under the dusk-to-dawn curfew against their will until suspects are apprehended.
