Nairobi County Administration Defies High Court Order on Thika Superhighway Speed Bumps and Rumble Strips

Nairobi County administration led by Governor Evans Kidero and Senator Mike Sonko are in trouble after the lapse of two months the High Court had given them to conduct a Sh300 Million recontruction project on the Thika Superhighway.

The county government has defied the court ruling made on February 7 ordering the removal of speed bumps and rumble strips erected at the Survey of Kenya and at Homeland/Kenya Breweries within two months.

The order that also mandated Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia to carry out the exercise was allocated Sh300 Million in the Ministry's budget.

The bumps that also serve as Zebra Crossings at Roosters - Opposite Garden City Mall - and at Allsops, were outlawed after an application by Senator Sonko indicated that they were an inconvenience to motorists.

Sonko argued that the rumble strips and bumps affected business for public transport operators who always have to slow down for pedestrians crossing at the zones causing traffic snarl-ups.

Justice George Odunga who made the ruling, ordered the CS and the County Government to ensure that pedestrians use the footbridges that are erected nearby.

"There is no rational basis for erecting rumble strips and speed bumps when the authorities concerned have erected footbridges for the benefit of the pedestrians," Judge Odunga ruled.

The Judge further called on the Senator to perform his role in ensuring security on the thoroughfares and footbridges pedestrians are required to use.

CS Macharia told the Daily Nation that designs for the missing footbridges were finally ready and the Ministry had begun a tendering process for contractors who would carry out the project.

"The procurement process and actual construction would be fast-tracked," Mr Macharia promised.

He projected that the renovation project would commence on June 7.
