'Molly' Ecstasy Drug Making Rounds in Posh Suburbs and Night Clubs in Nairobi

The alarm has been raised on a rape drug popularised by American musicians as "Molly" which has been making rounds within Nairobi.

"Molly" has been preferred by the sexual offenders for its almost instantaneous effect of making their victims hyper sexually active and excited.

The drug resembles fine brown sugar crystals packaged to look like a medicine capsule, it can be easily opened and its contents poured into the beverage of an unsuspecting victim.

A user of the drug told The Standard “Molly makes you hyper sexually active, and excited. If there are no ladies around, male users can find themselves touching each other.”

Molly is in actual fact the powdered form of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as ecstasy.

The effects of the drug can last up to one week after ingestion. Some of the immediate effects of the drug include significant reductions in mental abilities, blurred vision, rise in body temperature and impulsiveness.

In the long term, the drug can cause insomnia, high blood pressure, liver complications, schizophrenia, jaundice, memory loss, attention deficit, seizures and ultimately total loss of consciousness.

Dealers in well-off neighbourhoods like Karen, Hurlingham, Lavington, Westlands and Spring Valley have been reported to be peddling the drug to clients' homes, public parking lots and at clubs.

Head of Kenya’s Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) Hamisi Masa confirmed the reports indicating that no arrests in connection with the drug had been made.

"We have heard of Molly but there have been no reported confiscations. There is a notable use of these drugs by middle-class Kenyans," he conveyed.

Popular American artistes who have the made reference to the drug in their songs include Kanye West, Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa, Tyga and Madonna, who received a serious backlash after she openly, during a concert, asked her fans if they had seen "Molly".
