Scrap Metal Dealer Caught Selling Standard Gauge Railway Material in Mariakani

A scrap metal dealer was on Monday morning caught with a haul of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) material which he was selling in Mariakani, Kilifi County.

This comes after a section of the SGR was vandalised on Friday night by unknown people days before its historic launch.

Photos circulating on social media showed that part of the sidebars were destroyed.

The scrap metal dealer was arrested as authorities intensified the hunt for other people who were involved in the destruction.

The multi-billion project will be launched on Wednesday, May 31st by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

President Kenyatta will lead Kenyans in taking the inaugural ride aboard the high-speed train from Mombasa to Nairobi.

The 472 KM SGR line is Kenya’s largest single infrastructure project since independence, constructed at a cost of Sh327 Billion co-financed through commercial and semi-concessional loans from China and the Government of Kenya.
