Kenyan Politicians Whose Brother, Sister or Close Relative Will Contest in August 8 General Election

The August 8 General Election is set to be an interesting show that will see familiar relatives battle it out across the country in the grand scramble for leadership positions.

Here are some of the political family dynasties;

1. The Kenyatta Dynasty

President Kenyatta’s relatives in the just concluded Jubilee primaries sought elective seats in the country but lost. Nyokabi Gathenja, Uhuru's cousin and the Kiambu Woman Representative, lost in the primaries while Wanjiku Muhoho, also a cousin of the president, is set to vie for the Nyandarua Woman Representative seat as an independent candidate after also failing to clinch the Jubilee certificate.

2. Moi Dynasty

Kenya’s second President Daniel Moi's sons are also fighting to keep the Moi dynasty alive. His son, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, who is also the national chairman of KANU Party, will be defending his seat while his brother Raymond Kipruto Moi will be defending his Rongai parliamentary seat.

3. Raila Odinga Dynasty

The dynasty of ODM chief and NASA principal Raila Odinga suffered a setback after his elder brother Oburu Oginga was floored in his quest to recapture Bondo parliamentary seat while his cousin in Gem, the sitting MP Jakoyo Midiwo, was also shown the red card by the electorate.

Odinga’s sister Ruth Odinga was also snubbed by Senator Anyang Nyongo’s and Governor Jack Ranguma to be a running mate in Kisumu governorship. Ruth is yet to announce whether she is out of the race.

4. Wetangula Brothers

As Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula will be defending his seat, his younger brother Timothy Wanyonyi will also be defending his Westlands parliamentary seat in Nairobi.

5. The Kajwang Brothers

As TJ Kajwang will be battling nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro in Nairobi for the Ruaraka parliamentary seat, his younger brother Moses Kajwang, who is the Homa Bay Senator, will also be defending his seat on ODM party ticket.

Moses took over after the death of their elder brother Gerald Otieno Kajwang who passed on in November 2014.

6. Ongoro

Former Ombudsman Otiende Amolo's entry into elective politics means he could sit with his elder sister – nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro. Otiende will be vying for the Rarieda parliamentary seat.

Senator Ongoro will be facing the sitting Ruaraka MP, TJ Kajwang, who clinched the ODM ticket after she was barred from participating in the nominations following chaotic political rallies

7. In Bomet:

The wife and son of the late Minister Kipkalya Kones will also be going neck to neck in the August polls. Kipngetich Kalya is battling it out for the Bomet East parliamentary seat on a Chama Cha Mashinani ticket against his mother Beatrice Kones of Jubilee.

8. In Machakos:

Senator Johnston Muthama’s ex-wife Agnes Kavindu is running for a senatorial seat on a Jubilee ticket.

9. Kitui

Former journalist Enoch Wambua is running for the Senate while his brother-in-law Francis Nyenze is defending his Kitui West parliamentary seat on a Wiper ticket.
