Umoinner Matatu Crew Saves Couple From Hijacking Incident

A matatu plying the Umoja - Nairobi CBD route has hit headlines for all the right reasons after saving a couple from a hijacking experience along Jogoo road.

Njeri Mwangi, a woman who was in the vehicle that was being followed, on Thursday revealed that she noticed a Silver Bluebird Nissan closely trailing her from Madaraka Estate and tried to speed off.

To her surprise, the car continued following her as she cruised along the largely deserted road at 11.30 pm.

Upon reaching Total Petrol station near Buruburu estate, the couple found a matatu fueling and told the driver that they were being trailed by an unknown car and needed escort to the nearest petrol station.

The matatu belonged to Umoinner Sacco, registration number KCK 135C, and the driver agreed to escort the worried couple on condition that he would first drop off passengers at Donholm roundabout.

They agreed on the terms and after driving for a short distance to Manyaja Road, the car trailing them was nowhere in sight.

The couple proceeded to report the matter at a nearby police station and Njeri took to her Facebook page to convey her gratitude to the driver and conductor.

Matatus registered with Umoinner Sacco are notorious for flaunting traffic rules and just last week, one was set ablaze by irate residents after hitting a cyclist.

This kind gesture was widely applauded on social media forums where the driver, Francis Wambua, was lauded for his bravery.
