President Uhuru Kenyatta Issues Title Deed to Nubians in Kibra

A day after Opposition leader Raila Odinga was snubbed during Madaraka Day celebrations, President Uhuru Kenyatta had another surprise for Kibra residents where the Opposition leader enjoys massive support.

The president on Friday issued the Nubian Community with a title deed for a 288-acre communal land they have been laying claim to in the expansive Kibera informal settlement.

This brings to an end a spirited fight by the community to own the land on which they live after much of it was taken up by public facilities such as the Langata Women's Prison, Nairobi National Park and Langata Cemetery.

The president termed it a milestone stating that “ultimately we have found justice for you and I am very proud,” before handing over the deed to Council of Elders of the Kenyan Nubians led by Sheikh Issa Abdulfaraj.

Land remains an emotive issue that is already forming the agenda of political campaigns as the country heads to an election.

Coming at this time, the move will most likely be termed a political move.
