Nyamira Boda-boda Riders Protest at Rangenyo Girls High School as Girls Refuse to Shave Long Hair

Boda-boda riders yesterday held protests outside Rangenyo Girls High School in Nyamira after 12 girls were sent home for refusing to change their hairstyles.

The boda-boda operators spotted the girls at the bus terminus and opted to take them back to school to find out why they had been sent away.

On arrival at the school, they were not allowed to enter on orders by the school principal, Mrs Lydiah Onyoni, who did not wish to grant them an audience.

The refusal of admission then sparked the protests among the riders and residents who demanded an explanation on why the girls had been kicked out.

It later emerged that the girls had defied a directive given by the school principal, for all the girls in the school to have their hair clean-shaven.

The 12 had refused to shave their hair claiming that the barber did not observe basic rules of hygiene.

"The school had hired a private barber to shave all students but others refused after they raised concerns over allegedly unhygienic conditions they were being subjected to," one student at the school told Standard reporters.

The 12 girls were only allowed back into the school after Nyamira Sub-County Education Officer Mr Isaac Ombati came to their aid.
