Classic 105 presenter Maina Kageni on Wednesday sparked a hullabaloo on social media after sharing a video where he claims to have been cleared to vie for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat.
In the 2-minute video, Maina shows some documents which he describes as a certificate from the Registrar of Political Parties and a clearance from the IEBC which he claims to have received on 5th June.
“I didn’t take it seriously when people said I need to run for women representative. But after much thought and consideration I’ve realised that the demand is real and this is the time to make a move,” he states in the recording, staged to look like a press address.
He revealed that his symbol for campaigning would be a wig which he stated was the ultimate representation of the beauty of a Nairobi woman.
Maina took time to wish his competitors, Jubilee’s Rachel Shebesh and NASA’s Esther Passaris well during their campaigns.
“It is time women got proper representation and their voices heard for the stability of homes all over Nairobi,” he stated.
Nonetheless, going by the Constitution men cannot be allowed to contest for the Woman Representative seat as the law stipulates that the National Assembly should have 290 Members of Parliament, 12 nominated parliamentarians and "47 women each elected by the registered voters of the counties".
The motive behind Maina's recording remains unclear, however, speculations abound that it could be a promotion for the company behind the recording.
