Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua Accused of Not Having Resigned from Wiper

A day after former Member of Parliament (MP) Wavinya Ndeti was barred from the Governor race, it has now emerged that her rival, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua could be staring at similar trouble.

Sources within Wiper Party have now revealed that Governor Mutua did not officially resign from the Wiper before forming his Maendeleo Chap Chap Party.

A senior official at the Wiper Party headquarters in Lavington disclosed to a local daily that there was no letter officially written by Mutua declaring his resignation as required by the law.

"I can confirm Mutua is still a Wiper member since we do not have his resignation papers anywhere. He even owes the party over Sh1 million in subscription fees,"  a senior Wiper official who wished to remain anonymous told The Star.

The official added that Mutua was expelled from Wiper's National Delegates Conference last year for ditching the party but he did not formally resign.

The Governor, who is looking to defend his seat in the August polls, was elected on a Wiper ticket during the 2013 General Election.

Mutua's rival Wavinya Ndeti, who left her Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) Party for Wiper, was barred from the gubernatorial race on Thursday for allegedly being a member of two political parties.

The announcement was made on Thursday afternoon by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) which ruled that her nomination by Wiper was irregular.

The IEBC had already cleared Ndeti and awarded her a nomination certificate after winning the Wiper primaries.

On Friday Wavinya claimed that Mutua, his Deputy Bernard Kiala, and Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama were planning her downfall.

Meanwhile, Ms Ndeti's legal team has moved to the High Court to appeal the IEBC decision, with the registrar of political parties coming out to clarify that the former MP is not a member of two parties as announced by the electoral body.

According to the Registrar, Lucy Ndung'u, Wavinya is a Wiper Party member and had already resigned from CCU.
