Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki Tops Rank for Highest Number of Privately Sponsored Bills

A report on the status of legislative business for the lawmaking arm of government has revealed that Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki is top on the list of Senate members who have privately sponsored the most bills.

The Leader of the Majority, by his own initiative, has forwarded six bills for discussion as proposed laws in the House that have successfully processed 134 pieces of legislation since 2013.

Senator Kindiki is followed in rank by Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr and Nominated Senator Martha Wangari who have sponsored three private bills each.

Speaking yesterday, Mr Kindiki commended his fellow members for a job well done despite challenges the Senate had faced in its inaugural term.

"We have done a fantastic job despite the fact that a lot of time was lost settling down and setting up infrastructure for the senate," the top Senator commended.

He also urged the committees to compile a report on the pending bills in order to have a smooth transition as the next Senate is set to take over.

Kindiki’s private members’ Bills include the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Amendment) Bill, Alcoholic Drinks Control (Amendment) Bill, Public Finance Management (Amendment) Bill (co-sponsor), County Assembly Powers and Privileges Bill, Parliamentary Powers and Privileges Bill, County Retirement Scheme Bill and Community Land Bill.

The Senate will today reconvene for its final week of sittings as it is set to adjourn indefinitely on Thursday to allow Senators to concentrate on campaigns for the upcoming General Election.
