Pupils From St Anne's Primary School Block Jogoo Road After Accident

Transport was on Wednesday morning paralysed along Jogoo Road in Nairobi after pupils of St Anne's Primary School took to the streets to protest following an accident that left one person dead yesterday morning.

The children together with their parents and teachers were protesting after an Embassava Sacco Matatu hit and injured a volunteer who helps the learners cross the road.

Police arrived at the scene to contain the situation, however, the pupils remained put and could not stop barricading the road.

Traffic was diverted to other roads as the protesters blocked all forms of transport. A Kenya Prisons truck that was ferrying suspects to the nearby Makadara Law Courts was also caught up in the chaos.

Eyewitnesses told Kenyans.co.ke that a volunteer who helps students and pedestrians cross the road next to the Church Army round-about was injured during the accident that happened on Tuesday at 6am in the morning.

According to the witnesses, the volunteer was leading pedestrians across the road when he spotted the on-coming Embassava matatu.

The pedestrians proceeded to cross the road while he made his way back. To avoid hitting the students and pedestrians, the matatu driver swerved towards the volunteer, pushing him into the drainage along the road.

The matatu collided head-on with an oncoming lorry leaving the driver trapped. The rescue team led by St John Ambulance arrived at the scene shortly afterwards but the driver succumbed to the injuries he sustained.

The school management and pedestrians revealed to Kenyans.co.ke that such accidents are frequent along the busy road.

The management requested the relevant authorities to erect a speed bump near the scene of the accident or construct a foot bridge. This was also supported by pedestrians who use the busy road.
