2 Al Shabaab Suspects Planning to Bomb Nairobi Churches and Clubs Arrested

Police officers on Tuesday thwarted plans to bomb several churches in Nairobi County. Two suspects linked to the Al Shabaab militia group were arrested before the ploy could be executed.

In a statement to newsrooms, the police stated that: "The two suspects and their accomplices are suspected to have been planning to stage attacks in Nairobi; targeting entertainment joints and churches."

The police divulged that one of the suspects identified as Abdifatah Nur Ali was apprehended in Nairobi while his counterpart Farah Shale Aden was caught in Garissa.

According to intelligence reports, Ali was captured with fraudulent identification documents which Aden helped him obtain.

Police urged the public to remain vigilant and report any information they might have.

"Following the arrest of the two suspects, it is believed some of their accomplices have escaped and are on the run and are likely to sneak back to Somali to infiltrate the refugee camps to evade arrest. However, a manhunt is underway to have them arrested," the police statement read.

In December last year, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said police had intelligence reports that Al-Shabaab militants were planning a series of terrorist attacks.

"The terror threat remains a reality, and we, therefore, call upon members of the public to remain vigilant particularly in places with high concentration of people. These includes beaches, restaurants, and clubs as well as places of worship. Any suspicious person or activities should be reported promptly to the police," Boinnet stated.
