Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has taken a swipe at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over yesterday's remarks at a burial in which he suggested that Mt Kenya would one day have one dominant party.

Speaking on Thursday, January 8, during an interview on Spice FM, Kioni labelled Gachagua's alleged remarks as not only retrogressive but also unconstitutional.

"I heard someone saying that in this region, we will only have one party. That is a very retrogressive statement," the Jubilee party principal commented.

While criticising the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader, Kioni emphasised the need for protecting multi-party democracy in Kenya, insisting that Gachagua's remarks were out of order.

"It is not a statement you should make, even if you want to achieve it. It is against the Constitution. If he had said it when I was there, I could have contradicted him," he added.

Kioni further warned that such remarks from Gachagua could have far-reaching consequences on the united opposition and could trigger misunderstandings among members.

He went ahead to clarify that he could walk away from the opposition camp should the leaders continue making such remarks, which he noted risked eroding Kenya's democracy.

"We fought for this Constitution, and it is because of this pluralism that we can challenge each other. Because I am going to run in 2027, you are not going to sacrifice my political career on statements you continue saying," Kioni reiterated.

"I will leave you and follow my own path, and meet during the elections. But people might think I have a very big problem with these individuals, but I do not have, I just do not agree with some of their statements," he stated.

During the interview, Kioni also weighed in on the escalating tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), alleging a plot by some of the ODM members to 'auction' the party.

In his remarks, he likened the challenges currently facing ODM to the ones that faced Jubilee two years ago, further claiming that there had been previous plans to sell the Jubilee party.

"ODM is on sale, and they are currently trying to implicate former President Uhuru Kenyatta. But ODM members must fight for the soul of the party and fight for the spirit of Raila," Kioni noted.
