Kenya Railways has announced a temporary suspension of the Limuru Commuter Train service, affecting passengers who rely on the route between Nairobi Central Station and Limuru.
According to a notice issued by the corporation on Thursday, January 8, Kenya Railways stated that the commuter service would not operate on Friday, January 9, 2026.
Kenya Railways attributed the sudden and temporary suspension of the train service to what it described as unavoidable circumstances. It, however, did not specify the exact cause of the suspension.
"The Nairobi Commuter Rail Service train that normally plies the Nairobi Central station to the Limuru route in the morning and evening will not run tomorrow, January 9, 2026, due to unavoidable circumstances," Kenya Railways announced.
The Limuru commuter train operates under the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, running morning and evening schedules that ferry thousands of passengers daily between Limuru and Nairobi’s Central Business District.
The sudden suspension is expected to immensely inconvenience members of the public who depend on the service for work, school, and other daily activities.
The Corporation, however, reassured the public that the interruption is temporary, adding that regular services on the Nairobi–Limuru route are scheduled to resume on Monday, January 12, 2026.
In the notice signed by the Kenya Railways Managing Director, Philip Mainga, the Corporation expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and urged passengers to make alternative travel arrangements.
"Service will resume on Monday, January 12, 2026. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused," the notice read further.
The Nairobi Commuter rail always provides faster, safer, and cheaper transport daily for thousands of commuters, relieving them of the traffic congestion in Nairobi.
The suspension of the Limuru train service comes at a critical time as many Kenyans resume normal work and school following the end of the busy festive season.
Unlike matatus or buses, commuter trains offer a way to bypass the persistent traffic, providing a more predictable travel experience.
