2 Killed in Mandera Bus Attack

Two people have been confirmed dead and three others injured after suspected Al Shabaab militia attacked a bus they were travelling in at Daba Area, Mandera County.

The bus which was on transit to Nairobi, had over 50 passengers who were stopped and separated into two groups, Muslims and Non-Muslims.

"The militants separated the passengers into two groups Muslims and Christians but both groups took off and two people were killed," a police officer who spoke under anonymity told the Star.

The police have refuted claims that the bus was hijacked, claiming it was a normal attack that saw two die and the bus driver together with two passengers incur injuries.

According to officers who reported at the scene, the bus dubbed Makkah, left for Nairobi on Sunday morning and stopped overnight at Kotuo but failed to leave the station with police escort, which is mandatory in the region.

On November 22nd, 2014, 28 teachers were killed while on their way to Nairobi for the Christmas holiday. Al Shabaab militants hijacked the Nairobi-bound bus and executed non-muslims at Arabiya in Mandera near the Kenya-Somali border.
