Jubilee Abandons Campaigns in Kitui after Moses Kuria, Johnson Sakaja and Other Leaders Harassed

A Jubilee Campaign team in Kitui was forced to abandon their vote hunting mission after residents became hostile.

The team that was led by Gatundu South Member of Parliament (MP) Moses Kuria and Senator Johnson Sakaja hurriedly left after a crowd that had gathered at Kalundu market grew hostile and began harassing and shouting them down.

Trouble started when the agitated crowd declined to chant Jubilee party slogans.

The restless crowd shouted down the campaign group with chants of "Unga (flour), NASA and Wiper" filling the air.

Police officers led by Kitui Central boss Muthuri Mwongera were on high alert as the rally degenerated into disarray with ugly scenes reported.

Attempts by former Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya to calm the crowd failed, prompting the team to flee the area with a section of the crowd pursuing them while chanting Opposition slogans.

Meanwhile, Jubilee parliamentary candidate for Kitui Central Moses Banda has accused NASA of hiring hecklers and planting them in their rallies to disrupt them.

He disclosed that he had written to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission about the issue.

"I condemn the small group that was paid to try to disrupt the meeting. It is definitely a violation of election laws. I have personally registered the complaint with the electoral body," Banda said.

This was the second day of campaigns by the Jubilee team in the Ukambani region.

Similar scenes marked the first day when the leaders were verbally harassed, roughed up and booed in Machakos County.

The region is perceived to be a NASA stronghold with Wiper party commanding a huge following.

Jubilee party has however made attempts to capture votes from the region with a few leaders from the area defecting to Jubilee.
