Kiambu Governor William Kabogo who had strongly declared that he was backing President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election has now announced that he has cut links with Uhuru and his deputy William Ruto.
Speaking to a local daily, the Governor on Friday noted that he was not in Jubilee and had no reason to associate with the party or its leaders.
“I have nothing to do with President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.
“I’m done with Jubilee, I am an independent candidate, and I won’t associate myself with other people’s party. Yes, I was in Jubilee, but the shambolic party primaries made me leave," Kabogo stated.
The Governor noted that he was a member of the ruling party but fell apart with it after he was shortchanged in the nominations held in April.
He explained that as an independent candidate and chairman of the Kenya Alliance of Independent Candidates (KAIC), he would focus more of his energy on fighting to ensure that he is re-elected in the August elections.
The Governor urged the residents of Kiambu to come out in large numbers and support him during the August 8 polls.
Kabogo's new announcement comes only a few weeks after the Governor noted that KAIC would support President Kenyatta's re-election bid, despite losing in the primaries.
"Nominations will never be necessary again in the Republic of Kenya. We have separated. They're Jubilee candidates, we are Independent candidates. But we are all in support of Uhuru Kenyatta," the KAIC chair stated.
Kabogo is seeking to defend his Kiambu governorship position and will face off with his arch rival Kabete Member of Parliament Ferdinand Waititu of Jubilee.
