Court of Appeal Orders Jubilee Party to Conduct Fresh Nomination In Kitui South Constituency

The Court of Appeal on Friday morning ordered the Jubilee Party to conduct fresh nominations in Kitui South Constituency.

The Court quashed the nomination of  Member of Parliament Rachael Nyamai as the Jubilee candidate for the Kitui South parliamentary seat after an appeal was filed by her rival disputing the outcome of the exercise.

The fresh nominations are to be conducted within 48 hours.

Ms Nyamae, who is also a trained teacher, surprised many in 2013 when she defied the Wiper Democratic Party wave in her region to easily win the Kitui South Parliamentary seat.

The order to carry out fresh nominations comes shortly after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was ordered by the High Court to receive presidential aspirant Peter Solomon Gichira's papers within 36 hours.

Gichira was disqualified from the race by the electoral body for allegedly failing to meet all the requirements needed to run for the seat.

Mr Gichira had been arrested and locked up on May 27 after he allegedly attempted to commit suicide after IEBC rejected his papers.

He was arraigned in court on May 30 and charged with attempting suicide, creating disturbance and malicious damage to property.

Gichira denied the charges and was released on Sh200,000 cash bail or a bond of Sh200,000.
