Maasai Legislators Demand that Government Takes Action against Raila Odinga in 48-Hours

A group of Legislators from the Maasai community on Monday issued the government with a 48-hour ultimatum to state their progress on the investigation against Opposition leader Raila Odinga over alleged incitement remarks.

The Members of Parliament led by Moses Ole Sakuda (Kajiado West) stated that the remarks by the former Prime Minister last week while in a visit to Kajiado were "meant to incite the community against other groups in the region".

The politicians majorly drawn from Narok and Kajiado accused the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations of failing to take action against Raila.

The Sakuda-led team demanded that Raila retracts his statements and refrain from the land issues in the region noting that it could threaten the region’s stability.

“No one is above the law. We are giving the agencies 48 hours to give a report on the status of the ongoing investigations if at all any. The remarks come at a highly sensitive political season,” Sakuda stated.

Sakuda noted that Raila's remarks had precipitated tension among the communities and urged the NASA leaders to avoid discussing land matters in their next visit to the region.

“We are aware NASA principals are scheduled to tour Kajiado County tomorrow and we demand that they keep off the matter,” he stated.

Last week, Odinga while addressing a rally in Kajiado cautioned the local community against selling off their ancestral land.

The ODM leader stated that the locals had been rendered poor out of the fact that the laws did not allow them to sell their lands to develop their communities.

The remarks elicited mixed reactions including calls by the leader of Majority Aden Duale who called on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to probe Odinga over hate speech.

Odinga on his part, however, at a press conference sought to clarify the issue and stated that he had been misquoted.
