Nation Media Group journalist Walter Menya was arraigned at Milimani Law Courts on Monday on allegations of soliciting a bribe to write a damaging story, but it has emerged that he was set up by a mysterious man who had posed as a news source a few days earlier.
According to sources, Kennedy Kiprotich Koros met Menya on Thursday last week saying he had some documents about the operations of the Friends of Jubilee Foundation, a group that is allegedly involved in raising money for the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Menya stated that he was set to meet Koros the following day to get the documents and he received a call while in a meeting with fellow editor Mike Owuor and two other colleagues.
He excused himself, went and got his documents and immediately went back to the meeting.
"I took the documents from him outside Nation Centre and immediately went back to the meeting.
"It did not take long," said Menya.
The contents of the documents included details of how the lobby worked, its constitution and what it comprised of.
Menya then did the story after approval by his colleagues and on Saturday, Koros is said to have made calls, following up on the story and sought a meeting though it never came to fruition.
After the story was published in the Sunday Nation, it is alleged that Koros called Menya saying he had more incriminating documents against the Friends of Jubilee Foundation.
"I told him I was in church but he insisted we should meet...," narrated Menya.
The journalist told Koros that he was going to a hospital in Buruburu Estate but the latter insisted they should meet, saying he was at the hospital parking lot.
Menya then got into Koros' car but never got the additional documents, instead, he was handed an envelope for a 'job well done'.
It was at this point that six people who identified themselves as officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation said they were arresting him for soliciting a bribe.
