1 Killed, 2 Missing After Water Reservoir Wall Collapses in Kibera, Nairobi

One person died and two others went missing after a water reservoir wall collapsed on Friday in Kibera area, Nairobi.

The water from the reservoir flooded nearby houses damaging property.

Speaking to journalists, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero stated that the wall came down after heavy rains pounded the area on Wednesday.

"There is a wall that came down when it rained on Wednesday evening and water passed through some houses and took away three people. One lady was found dead and two are yet to be found," Dr Kidero stated.

He added,"The county government fire department and disaster management unit are on the ground trying to retrieve the bodies but we are also appealing to the national government to help in the search."

The Governor accused the contractor, Kenya Railways Corporation, of using substandard materials to build the wall.

He noted that the Corporation had not gone to the ground after the incident or given assistance to affected families.

Kidero ordered the contractor to meet up with the county engineers and officials from the planning department who would review the quality of their work.

Following the incident, the county government has stopped construction of the Kenya Railways houses and wall in Kibera until investigations are done.
