Raila Odinga's ODM Party Nominates KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has been nominated by the ODM Party led by Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Sossion was among other individuals whose names were forwarded to the IEBC by political parties as their nominees to the Senate, the National Assembly and county assemblies.

The nomination of the KNUT boss by ODM is believed to have been motivated by the need to attract the support of teachers who are regarded as the opinion leaders in the villages.

Political pundits also hold that ODM could be aiming at wooing voters from the South Rift region where Sossion hails from.

Speaking to a local daily, Mr Sossion, who comes from Bomet, confirmed that he had applied for the job.

“We wrote to all political parties asking them to nominate workers’ representatives to Parliament. If ODM has picked me, that is welcome for we shall diligently represent workers,” he said.

Also featuring on the political parties nominees' lists are politicians who lost in the nominations and individuals considered loyal to their respective parties.

Jubilee has nominated among others Starehe MP Maina Kamanda and Millicent Omanga who lost in the Nairobi Woman Rep nominations.

Other nominees include ODM secretary-general Agnes Zani, her Amani National Congress (ANC) counterpart Godfrey Osotsi, former MPs Basil Mwakiringo and Prof Ruth Oniango, Mountain View MCA Beatrice Kwamboka and Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) deputy secretary-general Ernes Nadome.

Political Parties taking part in the August General Election had until Saturday to electronically submit to IEBC the lists of members they want nominated to Parliament and county assemblies.

Failure to submit the names would see a political party fail to be considered in the allocation of the special seats in the Senate, National Assembly or the 47 county assemblies.
