Mombasa Gubertorial Aspirant Hezron Awiti's Campaign Billboards Pulled Down

Nyali Member of Parliament Hezron Awiti’s campaign billboards were pulled down on Wednesday by Mombasa County askaris.

Earlier on, Awiti, who is running for Mombasa governor seat, had accused the incumbent Governor, Hassan Joho of instructing agents not to erect campaign materials of his rivals.

"Joho is displaying dictatorial tendencies, which have been the hallmark of his leadership during the past four and a half years. Mombasa is not a Sultanate and we shall therefore not allow old school tactics, which marked [former] President Daniel Moi's era," Awiti stated on Sunday.

Awiti claimed he has served the County Government with a notice that he intends to erect the billboards.

The MP stated that despite paying Sh300,920 as down payment for the total sum of Sh1.8 Million required, he was blocked from the sites.

He claimed a cheque he had issued to Magnate Ventures Limited and Adsites Limited was returned to him by the county authorities.

The Vibrant Democratic Party (VDP) Leader asked the anti-corruption agency to investigate how much has been paid by the billboard advertising companies to the county in the last four years.

Mombasa Jubilee Gubernatorial Aspirant Suleiman Shahbal also accused Joho of blocking him from erecting billboards.

Joho's aide Richard Chacha, however, refuted the claims saying the Governor booked for space through the same companies.

Awiti and Shahbal will face off with Joho in the August 8 poll.
