Charles Mwangi Moves to Court Seeking to Block Raila Odinga From Presidential Race

National Super Alliance (NASA) flag bearer Raila Odinga has been taken to court regarding his academic certificates just over a month before the August General Election.

The case was filed on Thursday by a Kenyan voter who wants him blocked from vying in the August polls following a controversy over his papers.

The petitioner, Charles Mwangi, has asked the court to bar Odinga from participating in the presidential race after questioning his academic qualifications.

He now wants Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i ordered to present the ODM leader's Primary, Secondary and degree certificates before he is allowed to vie in the upcoming polls.

In the case, Mwangi has enjoined Matiang'i, EACC chairman Eliud Wabukala, Inspector General of Police Joseph Bionnet, IEBC boss Wafula Chebukati and Attorney General Githu Muigai.

This is the second attempt to have the NASA candidate disqualified from the election over his credentials.

In April, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Human Rights Africa, filed a similar case at the High Court questioning Odinga's degree which is said to have been acquired between 1965 and 1970.

The organisation wanted the ODM leader compelled to produce evidence that he holds a Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

It further sought an order to have the Commission for University Education (CUE) verify the former Prime Minister's academic credentials.

According to the body, Odinga claims to have acquired his Master's in 1970, yet the institution he attended only became a university recently.
