SGR Train Staff Accused of Colluding with Cartels to Hike Price of Tickets

Emerging details indicate that a number of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train staff have been colluding with unscrupulous individuals to sell tickets at a higher price.

The Kenya Railway is said to be investigating reports that some people have been buying off tickets and then selling them at a higher price on the travel day.

According to the set regulations, the sale of the tickets is supposed to start three days before the trip but reports indicate that this has not been happening.

Investigations have revealed that in some circumstances, the tickets are usually sold off before the day the sale is supposed to start.

The Corporation's Managing Director Atanas Maina confirmed that the body had received the complaints and was probing the matter to nab those involved in the shady business.

“We are investigating the matter to establish exactly who are involved in the scam. We are advising the public not to buy the hiked tickets. Let the tickets lapse in the illegal sellers' possession and that way they will not engage in that business,” he advised.

Two weeks ago, three people were arrested by the police after it was discovered that they had been illegally reselling tickets of the SGR train.

Coast Regional Director Nelson Marwa stated that the police were on the lookout for fraudsters taking advantage of travellers by selling tickets 42 percent above the set price.

“These fraudsters buy the tickets in large sums to create an artificial shortage and later sell to unsuspecting travellers at Sh 1000 for the economy class,” he stated.
