Cause of Laikipia Senator GG Kariuki's Death Revealed

New details have emerged showing that the Late Laikipia Senator Godfrey Gitahi Kariuki, famously known as G.G Kariuki, succumbed to a cardiac-related illness.

Mr Kariuki died at the age of 79 on Thursday night after being rushed to Nairobi Hospital the previous week.

On Sunday, the family disclosed that the Laikipia senator had been ailing for the past 18 months, adding that he would be laid to rest at his Rumuruti farm on July 14.

“We are meeting with the organising committee to come up with the programme. We have agreed to bury our loving father on July 14,” the family spokesperson and G.G Kariuki's son Robert Mwangi said.

Security officials in Laikipia have confirmed that various leaders led by President Uhuru Kenyatta are expected to attend the burial.

The president had earlier mourned the Senator as a pragmatic leader who immensely contributed to the liberation and growth of Kenya.

“The contribution of the late Senator G.G Kariuki will forever be engrained in our minds and history books. As a young leader during independence, he played a key in resolving land conflicts and the resettlement of squatters, particularly in Laikipia, as well as standing for the rights of all Kenyans where he felt they were being trampled by those in authority, “ he stated.

Kariuki, who was the oldest member of the 11th Parliament, joined politics in 1959 and was elected to the National Assembly in 1963.

The Senator formerly served as Laikipia West MP and a Cabinet Minister in President Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Moi's administrations.
