Moi University Student Dickson Siengo to be Jailed for 8 Years for Killing Schoolmate

A 20-year-old Moi University student has been sentenced to eight years in prison after he was found guilty of killing his schoolmate.

Dickson Siengo allegedly stabbed Stephen Mututho eight times following a fight over a woman identified as Faith Bwire on March 21, 2016.

Chief Magistrate Charles Obutusula found Siengo guilty of manslaughter.

"The deceased was stabbed eight times using a kitchen knife from the room of your girlfriend. For each stab, the court is giving you one year," the Magistrate stated in his ruling.

"You are taking a hospitality course that trains you to be hospitable to people who are not friendly and control anger. It’s unfortunate that Stephen is gone and that whatever sentence this court gives will not bring him back."

Siengo, who was studying hospitality at the institution, had asked for a non-custodial sentence so that he could complete his education however the Magistrate rejected his plea.

The magistrate further noted that Siengo had not tried to contact Mututho's family and that the serious offence requires a deterrent sentence.

Siengo had also pleaded with the court for the option of a fine, but the Magistrate declined the plea noting that a fine option would amount to putting a price on life.

The student has 14 days to appeal the ruling.
