18 Parents Punished After Students Attacked Teachers in Wekoye Primary School, Tana River

Parents from Wekoye Primary School in Tana River County have been punished after their children attacked teachers at the institution.

The school's Board of Management (BoM) found the students guilty of harassing their teachers by throwing stones at the staff quarters.

The children threw stones at the teachers' houses for consecutive nights causing their teachers to fear for their lives.

18 parents were each fined Sh2,000 as punishment for their children's misdeeds and to serve as compensation for the damage caused on the teachers' houses.

"Since the offences were committed at night, the school board felt that the parents were also culpable because they have the responsibility of knowing where their children are during that time.

"It will also serve as a lesson to other parents to monitor their children’s whereabouts at night," Chardende Chief Idris Jilo explained.

Chief Jilo and the school head teacher, Mr Suleiman Hassan Farah confirmed that the children had also received punishment for the act as they were asked to clear mathenge trees within the school compound.

The teachers, however, conveyed that despite the Board's stern action, the children have continued to assault them and their next move would be to involve the police.

"We are now planning to report the matter to the police because although the BoM has taken action, the pupils have not stopped harassing us. We cannot sleep at night," one of the teachers told KNA reporters.

The incident is similar to another in Samburu County where Kirimoni Primary School pupils descended on their teachers with clubs and machetes protesting punishment from female teachers.
