Three Kenyans Awarded by Queen Elizabeth for Outstanding Achievements

Three young Kenyans were honoured by Queen Elizabeth II after brilliant milestones in their respective fields.

Chebet LesanDomitila Chesang and Towett Ngetich were awarded the Queen’s Young Leaders Award for transforming lives in their communities.

The Queen's Young Leaders Programme was launched at the time of her Diamond Jubilee and aims to discover, celebrate and support young people across the Commonwealth

Lesan is the founder of  Bright Green Renewable energy, an enterprise that uses paper and agricultural waste to make charcoal. The idea, which has been termed one of the best approaches to conserving the environment, also made her bag the Mandela Washington Fellowship, which enabled her to network with other bright minds.

Chesang, on the other hand, was recognised for her fight against Female Genital Mutilation and early marriages.

She has been vocal in West Pokot and has saved many young girls from FGM, ensuring they go to school.

Ngetich was awarded for developing a healthcare mobile application that links patients to certified medical consultants.

The social enterprise is dedicated to the fight against counterfeit medicines and health products in pharmacies and stores.

He launched the website after he read a World Health Organisation (WHO) report on the low accessibility of essential medicines in all developing countries.

Uthabiti.org creates a one-stop shop where patients can log into a mobile app and consult a registered and certified medical doctor.

The doctor then attaches a medical prescription, sick notes or referrals to the patient’s cart.

The patient has another option of logging into the “find a pharmacy” portal and buy drugs from pharmacies registered by Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya.

Winners of this prestigious award will receive a unique package of training, mentoring and networking that will go a long way in helping them continue and develop the work they are already doing in their communities.
